Men have the responsibility to be persons of action – to reject the standard of quiet desperation that the uninitiated choose by default – to chase down purpose with reckless abandon – to serve a cause greater than our self-interest to become the king over our castle.

The 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, said: “Get action; do things; be sane; do not fritter away your time; create; act; take a place wherever you are and be somebody; get action.”

Reflecting on my life- when I am at my lowest- times of loneliness, time of struggle or stagnation, times of internal or unhealthy external conflict – I can always trace back to a lack of action. My workouts are usually crap, my diet is garbage, my reading habits are television, and my commitment to my friends is weak. Put differently, there is no getting of action in my life.

On the other side of the coin – when the iron is moving in the gym, brotherhood is building with those I love, when my marriage is hot and healthy and my commitment to personal development is apparent – those are the time I feel fullest; the time where I see my purpose being acted out consistently.

Here’s the deal dudes- the above is not an all-encompassing all-or-nothing kind of prescription. I can be off in one area and killing it in others – and the topic of keeping priorities straight is a whole other conversation- but you get the gist of it.

Get some. Get your sweat on- even if it is going for a walk around the block. Crack a book. Call a friend and grab a drink. Hit on your wife and get after it. Get action humming in your life.

For those of you who love the thought of being a king in your life, of punching life square in the teeth and ripping the heart out of failure and negativity – I’ve got some good news for you- you were created to do so. Even if you feel it is the farthest thing from your reality. Start the journey with action. Take the step and change your life.

The moment you have clarity with your vision and start living accordingly is the moment you will begin to face the most opposition.

Is it me, or are we afraid of risk? It seems as though we live in these bubbles of “safety” where we incessantly work to keep things from getting out of hand. I’m not talking about COVID. I’m talking about that job you’ve been looking at that would provide margin. Or that workout routine you’ve been putting off (speaking to myself here). That person you should be asking forgiveness from, or more importantly that person you need to forgive. Maybe it’s a volunteer role you’ve been asked to fill. I haven’t researched it, I may be wrong, but it seems like we have either pulled back due to apathy or we’re trying to control everything. Maybe it’s both. Look at your own life and decide for yourself.

Unfortunately, we are living in a culture in which many men have been on the receiving or giving end of egregious intentional wrong-doing. Many men have been living through years of painful relationships that have damaged their ability to engage in peaceful and fruitful relationships. These circumstances may result in an attitude of unforgiveness, which can spiral down into bitterness. Bitterness blows out the candle of peace and joy in a soul, leaving it empty.
